Madison had three pitchers that teamed up to complete the shutout. Starting pitcher Brian Morrell (Notre Dame) and relievers Leon Hunter(North Carolina A&T) and Nicholes Morales (San Jose State), allowed a combined five hits and issued four walks in total.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Mallards offense opened the scoring with a two-run double by Trevor Boone (Oklahoma State) and Morrell held serve in the bottom of the inning. Through five innings, Madison led 2-0 and Morrell finished his day going five innings and only allowing one hit.
Two innings later, Leon Hunter, the Mallards relief pitcher, worked out of a jam to preserve the 2-0 Madison lead. With the bases loaded and only one out, Hunter struck out Will Baker and then got the next batter to ground-out, keeping the Bombers off the board. Morales then took over in the eighth inning and collected a two-inning save and preserved a 3-0 Mallards win.
The Mallards will return to action tomorrow night to take on the Kenosha Kingfish. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Gates will open at 5:30 PM and the game features A1 Furniture and Mattress Princess Night.
