The Madison Mallards faced off with the Rockford Rivets in a day/night doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game of the day was a slug fest as the Mallards took the first game by a score of 14-12. The second game of the day did not feature the same offensive explosion as the first, Madison lost the night game 5-4.
In the first game, Madison and Rockford combined for 30 hits and 26 runs. Early on, the Mallards jumped out to a 7-4 lead but couldn’t maintain a lead throughout. The game featured three lead changes before the Mallards pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the seventh behind Drew Campbell’s RBI single scored David Vinsky.
Manager Donnie Scott commented on the team’s persistence, “I just told them that hey, this is why you’re here. Being tired is just a mindset. You can turn it up notches and that’s what you’re trying to figure out coming to this league. They responded.”
Nicholes Morales threw two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Mallards, who pushed their record to 23-6 with the victory.
The night cap of the double header featured some better pitching, as both teams were neck and neck throughout. In the eighth inning, the Mallards were leading 4-3 when Rockford led off the inning with a double. Some errant defense allowed the Rivets to push two runners across, giving them a 5-4 lead. In the ninth, the Mallards were threatening to score as they had both the tying and winning runs on base. The ball was put in play but the runner was called out on a close call at first to end the game.
