MADISON, Wisconsin | Kirk Triplett collected birdies on holes 11, 13, 14, 15, and 16 to come back and win the inaugural American Family Insurance Championship Sunday at University Ridge in Madison at 17-under par. But it wasn’t just Triplett feeling truly successful over the weekend in Madison. The entire event was a huge success. With warm, sunny conditions most of the weekend corporate sponsors were happy as thousand of fans showed up | an estimated 56,000 fans to be exact! That easily beat reported projections. Also when dollars are added up, the tournament is likely to give nearly $1 million to charity. That’s a huge amount for a first-year event.
Steve Stricker, who will be a part of the Champions Tour as a player at age 50 this year, was ecstatic as the tournament host.
“I think we’re a little blown away,” Stricker said. “To see the whole town and the whole community get behind it.. it tickels us to death.”
Fellow Madison resident Jerry Kelly will also be a part of the event next year which is scheduled July 23-25, 2017 at University Ridge golf course.
